Teaching adjectives is always more fun with hands-on adjective activities! I created these adjective activities for first grade when my students were having trouble identifying adjectives. Even though I created the Adjective Café for first grade, it can be used in any grade level. Use this fun activity for 2nd grade, 3rd grade, or even kindergarten, and it will still be a huge hit!
Preparing the Adjective Activities
This adjective activity was created to use as an adjective review. I did this with my first graders at the end of our adjective unit. We worked for about three weeks on identifying adjectives and completing adjective writing activities. So make sure you have been teaching adjectives before hosting your Adjective Café!
Next up, decide on a menu for your café. The students will taste each food and use adjectives to describe and review the food. I sent home a parent letter that is included in my Adjective Activities packet. My parents were more than happy to send in supplies for our adjective review, so it was easy prep for me! My Adjective Activities packet also has an editable page to add in your own menu items.
To make the day extra special, I ordered some cheap plastic tablecloths and aprons for the students. When I gave them their aprons, I told them they were becoming Master Chefs at identifying adjectives! I was lucky enough to have an empty classroom in my school to set up my café. However, it will work just as well in your classroom! The morning of our adjective review, I set up their plates and adjective worksheets. Their excitement was well worth the extra work!
Host the Adjective Café
The great thing about this adjective activity is that it can be adjusted for your grade level! If you are needing adjective activities for 1st grade or teaching adjectives to kindergarten, the students can simply taste the food and create one adjective to describe it. If you are using these adjective activities for 2nd graders or 3rd graders, you can use a different adjective worksheet and have them write a sentence using the descriptive adjectives. It’s so fun to let the students be food critics and see their personalities come to life!
We had a blast and the kiddos were experts at identifying adjectives by the time they left the café. When we returned to the classroom, we completed an adjective writing activity to wrap up the day. The students wrote about their favorite part using these recording sheets. I loved reading about what they loved!
Get rid of those boring adjective worksheets, teacher friends. Teaching adjectives can be SO FUN.
